我认为，一个人搜集传说，需要有空闲、耐心、毅力和良好的记忆力。我努力不去改变任何东西，而只是写下故事叙述者的原话。叶芝先生有时和我一块儿在讲述现场，或者我会带他去亲自倾听我所听到的故事，好让他确保我并未遗漏或添加任何东西。我写满了很多个本子，渐渐地，对于民间传说、对于关于圣徒、英雄、巨人和巫师的故事，还有那些幻景，我都形成了十分翔实的记忆力。而为此我也不得不“付出了代价”，从某种程度上失去了记忆力中切实有用的方面：记不得姓名、日期和乘法表，还有街上朋友住处的门牌号码。
我起初搜集这些故事，是在沿海地带。后来，我去了因希莫尔岛、因希曼岛和因希埃尔岛，因此我把与海有关的故事放在最前面。
